The Truth Is Hiding Where Most People Never Look
I was walking a used first-gen Raptor at a dealer lot last week. My buddy John is thinking about picking one up. Within the first minute, something caught my eye. Black spray paint inside the fender wells. Fresh. Too fresh. Like it had been done that morning to cover something up. Most buyers would walk right past that. It looks clean at a glance. But when you’ve spent years designing parts that live in those exact spaces — the wheel wells, the frame rails, underneath the bumper — you start to see things differently. You don’t just look at a truck. You read it and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
A clean exterior doesn’t mean a solid build. In fact, some of the worst builds look the best at first glance. The reality is simple: The areas most people ignore are the areas that tell the truth and are not always in plain sight. Fashion over function, it’s a mistake I see too often. What I like to do is function first. It’s bound to look good if it works well.
That’s the same mindset we bring into everything at Westcott Designs™. Whether we’re evaluating a used truck or engineering a new product, the focus is always the same, what’s happening underneath, behind, and beyond what most people notice. Because that’s where performance lives. That’s where durability is proven.
Jeff’s 5-Point Build Inspection
If you’re evaluating a truck, planning a build, or even just trying to understand what separates a good setup from a bad one, this is where to start.
1. Weld Quality
Not just whether it holds but how it was done. Clean, consistent welds tell you everything about the builder. Sloppy welds might hold for now, but they usually point to rushed work, poor prep, or lack of pride. You can always tell the difference.
2. Fit and Gap Consistency
Factory fitment is your baseline. If an aftermarket part doesn’t meet or exceed that level of precision, something’s off. Tight, consistent gaps mean the part was designed properly and not forced into place.
3. Frame and Fender Well Condition
This is where the truth lives. Dirt is fine and wear is expected. But fresh paint in hidden areas? That’s usually covering something. Always look deeper. Always question anything that looks “too clean” in places that shouldn’t be.
4. Shock Service History
Mileage doesn’t tell the full story, usage does. A properly serviced shock from a heavily used rig is often a better indicator of care than a low-mileage truck with neglected components. Ask questions. Look for records. Check for signs of maintenance.
5. The Details Nobody Told Them to Do
This is the separator. Anyone can bolt on parts. Not everyone takes the time to go the extra step by cleaning edges, matching lines, finishing areas that no one will ever see. That’s how you tell the difference between a builder and someone just installing parts.
This Is How We Build at Westcott Designs™
Every part that leaves our shop in Phoenix goes through this exact lens. We obsess over the details most people never see:
- Radiuses that match factory body lines
- Double-laid top plates for strength and longevity
- Welds clean enough to show — even if they’ll never be seen
Because out on the trail, none of the marketing matters. When you’re 40 miles deep in the Sonoran Desert Off Road Trails, you’re not thinking about logos or packaging. You’re relying on the person who designed that part and whether they paid attention when it counted. That’s what we build for. Check out our sliders to get a better idea of our quality product.
Jeff Westcott Quotes to Remember
“If you’re not going to replace parts on your vehicle with better parts than you’re taking off then you probably shouldn’t be replacing those parts at all.”
Thank You to the Westcott Community
