The finished GX 550 delivers an aggressive but refined appearance, with upgrades selected for how the customer actually intends to use the vehicle.
Rego Front Bumper: Clean Fitment and Improved Trail Functionality
One of the most noticeable upgrades on this Lexus GX 550 is the Rego front bumper.
When selecting aftermarket armor for a modern SUV, fitment and styling matter just as much as functionality.
The GX 550 has distinctive factory body lines, and a poorly integrated bumper can disrupt the vehicle’s appearance.
That’s one of the reasons our team appreciates the Rego design.
As Jacob explains in the video, the bumper follows the GX’s body lines closely, creating a clean appearance that looks right at home on the vehicle.
Why This Customer Chose a Front Bumper Without a Winch
Not every off-road build needs a winch.
For this particular customer, the goal wasn’t to build an extreme rock-crawling vehicle.
Instead, the owner wanted improved front-end clearance, additional lighting, and the rugged appearance of an aftermarket bumper.
The Rego bumper provided the desired configuration without adding a winch the customer didn’t expect to need.
This is an important part of our build philosophy at Westcott Designs™.
The best upgrade is the one that fits how you actually use your vehicle.
Baja Designs Lighting: OnX6 and Amber S8 Light Bars
A capable off-road lighting setup should provide illumination where it’s needed.
For this GX 550, we installed a combination of Baja Designs lighting products into the front bumper.
The setup includes an OnX6 light bar along with S8 auxiliary light bars featuring amber lenses.
Each serves a different purpose.
OnX6 Light Bar for Forward Illumination
The OnX6 provides additional forward-facing illumination for appropriate off-road driving conditions.
Depending on the selected beam pattern, this type of lighting can help illuminate the trail farther ahead of the vehicle.
Amber S8 Lights for Near-Field Visibility
The amber S8 lights were selected to provide illumination closer to the vehicle.
Jacob explains that amber lighting can be particularly useful in dusty, snowy, or rainy conditions.
In some environments, amber or selective-yellow lighting may reduce perceived glare and backscatter compared with certain white-light setups, although actual performance depends on beam pattern, intensity, weather, and mounting position.
The combination gives the driver multiple lighting options for different trail conditions.
Auxiliary lights should always be used in accordance with applicable road-use laws and lighting regulations.
FOX 2.5 Suspension: Why the GX 550 Needs the Right Tune
Suspension is one of the most important parts of this build.
For the front, we installed FOX 2.5 Performance Series coilovers with a heavy-duty spring and damping configuration.
The rear suspension features FOX 2.0 shocks.
But as Jacob emphasizes, selecting the right suspension components is only part of the equation.
The tuning matters.
Why Heavy-Duty Suspension Tuning Matters
The Lexus GX 550 is a substantial vehicle, and the front suspension must support the weight of its engine, chassis, and installed equipment.
Jacob explains that our team prefers a heavy-duty spring and damping configuration for this application.
The goal is to provide appropriate support while maintaining the ride characteristics expected from a premium SUV.
A suspension system that’s poorly matched to the vehicle’s weight and configuration can affect ride quality, handling, and available suspension travel.
FOX 2.5 Front Coilovers
The FOX 2.5 coilovers provide the front suspension foundation for this build.
The heavy-duty configuration was selected to suit the vehicle and the intended setup.
FOX 2.0 Rear Shocks
At the rear, FOX 2.0 shocks complete the suspension package.
Together, the front and rear components create a coordinated setup designed around this customer’s GX 550.
According to Jacob, the finished vehicle rides exceptionally well.
For our team, that’s the goal: a suspension upgrade that improves the build without unnecessarily compromising everyday comfort.
Fitting 35-Inch Tires on the Lexus GX 550
One of the biggest questions we receive about the Lexus GX 550 is:
Can you fit 35-inch tires on a GX 550 Overtrail?
This build demonstrates one possible configuration.
We installed 315/70R17 tires, a metric size commonly considered part of the 35-inch tire category.
The nominal calculated diameter is approximately 34.4 inches, although actual dimensions vary by tire manufacturer and model.
The important part isn’t just the tire size.
It’s how the tire works with the wheel, suspension, and available clearance.
Why Tire Load Range Matters
Jacob discusses tire load range as an important consideration for the GX 550.
For this build, the team selected a Load Range D tire.
He explains that the shop often prefers Load Range C tires when an appropriate option is available, with Load Range D serving as an alternative.
Load Range E tires can have a firmer construction and may produce a harsher ride in some configurations, particularly when tire pressure isn’t appropriately matched to the vehicle and load.
However, load range alone doesn’t determine ride quality or suitability.
Tire load capacity, pressure requirements, manufacturer specifications, and actual vehicle weight must all be considered.
The right tire should support the vehicle’s requirements while delivering the desired balance of comfort, durability, and off-road performance.
Black Rhino Wheels: Why +35 mm Offset Makes a Difference
Wheel offset is one of the most overlooked aspects of building a properly functioning off-road vehicle.
For this GX 550, we selected Black Rhino 17 x 8.5-inch wheels with a +35 mm offset.
That choice was intentional.
What Is Wheel Offset?
Wheel offset is the distance between the wheel’s centerline and its mounting surface.
Positive offset positions the mounting surface toward the outside face of the wheel.
Negative offset positions it toward the inside face.
When wheel width remains the same, reducing positive offset generally moves the wheel farther outward.
But wheel width and offset must always be considered together.
Why We Chose +35 mm Offset
For this build, the +35 mm offset positions the wider wheel and tire package relatively close to the fender line.
Jacob explains that this helps the tire move into the wheel well as the suspension articulates.
By contrast, a wheel with significantly less positive offset or a negative offset may position the tire farther outside the fender.
That can increase the likelihood of interference with the fender or surrounding components during steering and suspension movement.
Understanding Scrub Radius
Wheel offset also influences scrub radius.
Scrub radius describes the relationship between the tire’s contact patch and the steering axis where it intersects the ground.
Changing wheel offset can alter that relationship, affecting steering feel, feedback, and how forces are transmitted through the steering system.
For this GX 550, our team selected a wheel configuration intended to provide a more aggressive stance without moving the tire unnecessarily far outward.
It’s a good example of why wheel fitment should be approached as an engineering decision, not just a styling choice.
Important: This build demonstrates one wheel and tire configuration. It does not guarantee identical clearance on every GX 550. Tire brand, actual dimensions, alignment, suspension setup, and vehicle equipment can affect fitment.
Westcott Designs™ Switch-Pros Mount: Clean Auxiliary Lighting Controls
With multiple auxiliary lights installed, the customer needed a practical way to control the system.
That’s where our Westcott Designs™ Switch-Pros mounting solutions come into play.
We installed a Switch-Pros control system with dedicated mounting locations both under the hood and inside the cabin.
Underhood Switch-Pros Module Mount
Our underhood module mount is positioned behind the battery near the firewall.
This provides a dedicated location for securing the Switch-Pros module away from unnecessary clutter and in a location selected with surrounding components in mind.
The goal is a clean, organized installation that makes the electrical system easier to manage.
Interior Flush-Mount Switch-Pros Panel
Inside the vehicle, we installed our Westcott Designs™ interior Switch-Pros mount.
This solution provides a recessed mounting location for the control panel, creating a clean, integrated appearance.
Instead of having an auxiliary switch panel awkwardly attached to the dashboard, the mount allows the controls to sit neatly within the interior.
The driver can access the auxiliary lighting controls without sacrificing the refined appearance of the GX 550 cabin.
It’s a relatively small detail, but one that contributes significantly to the overall quality of the build.
Building a Lexus GX 550 Around the Way You Drive
One of the biggest lessons from this build is that the most capable vehicle isn’t necessarily the one with the longest list of modifications.
It’s the one with the right combination of upgrades.
For this customer, that meant:
- A front bumper with the desired clearance and appearance
- Auxiliary lighting for different off-road conditions
- A suspension package selected for the GX 550’s weight and configuration
- A 35-inch-class tire package with carefully considered wheel offset
- Cleanly integrated lighting controls
- Professional installation with attention to fitment and functionality
The result is a Lexus GX 550 Overtrail that maintains its premium appearance while becoming more tailored to the owner’s off-road adventures.
Why Professional Installation Matters for a Lexus GX 550 Build
Modern off-road vehicles have increasingly sophisticated suspension, steering, electrical, and safety systems.
Upgrading one component can affect how other systems operate.
For example, a larger tire package can influence steering clearance, braking response, and vehicle dynamics.
Suspension modifications can affect ride height, alignment, and travel characteristics.
Additional lighting requires proper electrical integration.
At our Westcott Built installation shop in Phoenix, Arizona, we work with customers to select and install components that complement their vehicles and intended use.
From suspension and wheel packages to lighting and exterior accessories, our focus is on creating complete builds rather than simply installing unrelated parts.
We also install quality aftermarket products from other manufacturers when they’re the right fit for the project.
That includes brands such as FOX, Baja Designs, Rego, and Black Rhino, as featured in this GX 550.
